California Student Health Insurance

: Keeping College Students Healthy and Protected

Colleges and universities all across the state of California recommend their students to be enrolled in a California student health insurance plan before being admitted to their institutions. If the student cannot afford such a health care plan, the college or university he or she is in usually lets the student join their in-house health program. This is to ensure that the student’s health will continue to be safeguarded as he or she pursues his or her academic goals. What the educational institution would do is to add the cost of the health program to the student’s tuition.

Many students, in their youthful arrogance, are often complacent with their health and are content with the quality of health care provided in school. This is not a slight to the kind of health programs provided by schools in California, but in some schools, the quality of these health programs could be better. Despite their youth, students cannot really afford to ignore health care, especially when they have existing health conditions or if they are medical students who deal with sick people as part of their education.

Choosing a Student Health Care Plan

If you are a college student and you feel that you should get your own health insurance instead of relying on the health care program provided by the school, you should do your shopping for health care providers beforehand and pick the one that suits you the best. The first thing you should do, however, is to inquire with your school as to what requirements they have regarding third-party health insurance providers that cater to students.

You must be sure that the health care provider of your choice meets the requirements of your school. Otherwise, if the insurance company fails to live up to your school’s requirements, you may not be able to get a waiver from your school for the in-house health care program. In the end, you will find yourself paying for two forms of health services when you need only one.

Be Safe Rather Than Sorry

As a college student, you may feel that you are young and healthy and able to take on the world. But you do not know the future and health insurance is the only way to truly transfer your financial risk to pay medical bills to the health insurance company.
